Bacteria Found In Irish Soil Fights Superbugs

G Quinn, Swansea University

A new strain of bacteria was found in Irish soil that has been found effective against superbugs (an infection that is resistant to multiple antibiotics). It was found around Boho Highlands, Northern Ireland. This new strain has been named Streptomyces sp. Myrophorea and can kill superbugs such as MRSA. It can kill 4 out of 6 of the most dangerous superbugs. The World Health Organization is very happy about this new bacteria because they said that antibiotic resistant superbugs are one of the biggest problems in the world. Scientists have predicted that superbugs could kill up to 1.3 million people in Europe by 2050. The new bacteria could help lower this number.
