Brunei Passes a New Penal Code That Requires Stoning for Certain Crimes

The government of Brunei has introduced a penal code that requires stoning to death for gay sex, adultery, and having an abortion, which has been condemned by many people around the world. Several celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres, George Clooney, and Billie Jean King have called for boycotts against hotels that are linked to the government of Brunei. “Tomorrow, the country of #Brunei will start stoning gay people to death,” said Ellen DeGeneres in a tweet. “We need to do something now. Please boycott these hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei. Raise your voices now. Spread the word. Rise up.”

Although this penal code has already gone into effect, there are questions on whether or not the new laws will actually be enforced. "What I'm hearing from people in Brunei is that this is very, very unlikely to ever happen," said BBC reporter Bill Hayden. "The way it is being explained to me is that this is a way for the sultan to look religious but make sure that none of these punishments will actually be carried out.”
