Colin Kaepernick has been popping up on headlines again after another controversy. Recently, few performers turned down the offer to play during the Super Bowl halftime show. This all started after Rihanna declined to perform. Rihanna stated that the reason for this is that she wasn’t happy with the way Colin Kaepernick was punished. Pink also reportedly declined the invitation after contract negotiations dragged on for too long. When the NFL asked Maroon 5 to perform, many people were telling the band to decline the offer.
In 2016, Kaepernick started kneeling during the national anthem. This really stirred things up. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said. The act led to more NFL players kneeling during the anthem. The NFL shrugged off the matter at first. Then, in May 2018, the NFL announced a new rule. The rule stated that the players couldn’t kneel during the anthem, but had the option to stay in the locker room. Two months later, the NFL announced that they would not enforce the rule after backlash from the public.
Although it took the NFL a while to find performers for the Super Bowl this year, they think they are locked and loaded right now. Maroon 5 has been selected to perform at half-time in the Super Bowl. Alongside them will be Big Boi and Travis Scott.
