Movie Review: Avengers Endgame

From Marvel Studios

Endgame Review: When I first heard about a superhero called Iron Man getting a movie back in 2008, I thought that it would be a big flop. Then, all my friends said it was amazing and finally after plenty of pushing I went and saw it. I was amazed at how relatable and funny this character was. Then. the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) was born.

Spoilers Ahead!

Avengers: Endgame follows 9 main protagonists; Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Ant Man/Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and War Machine/James ”Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle) as they search for the Infinity Stones to reverse the deaths of trillions. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos (Josh Brolin) used the Infinity Stones to snap half of the population of the universe out of existence. The heroes, now defeated, decide to confront Thanos and use the Infinity Stones to reverse Thanos’s “Decimation”.

The movie starts with Iron Man and Nebula drifting aimlessly in space, waiting for their oxygen supply to run out. Iron Man and Nebula first seem tense with each other, but Iron Man then teaches Nebula to have fun, something she never has done before. Iron Man is seen taping a video message to his wife Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), telling her he is about to die. Just as Iron Man starts to fall asleep for the last time, he sees a bright light in front of him. He opens his eyes to see Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) floating there, smiling at him. She carries him back to Earth to see the rest of the Avengers mourning the loss of their fallen compatriots. Captain America tells the rest to have hope, claiming that they will reverse this. Captain America tells the others that they have to go and find Thanos and use the Infinity Stones to bring back the people he killed. Tony then declares that Thanos is invincible, calling their attempt futile. Captain Marvel convinces everyone by stating that they will succeed because they have her.

After detecting bursts of cosmic energy on a distant planet, the Avengers deduce that Thanos must be there. Surprisingly, the Avengers go to the planet and ambush him. They interrogate Thanos about what happened to the Stones and he tells them that he destroyed them. Shortly after, Thor gets mad, cuts off Thanos’s arm and chops off Thanos’s head. He says after, “I aimed for the head”, referring to when he didn’t kill Thanos in Infinity War by failing to aim for his head.

The movie then forwards by five years, showing the aftermath of the Decimation, with civilians trying to rebuild civilization. Then, we see Black Widow at the new Avengers HQ, where she is speaking with other characters in a hologram conference. Captain Marvel explains that she is off the world helping other planets to cope with the Decimation, and War Machine talks about how there was an attack in Mexico by a cartel. He thinks that Hawkeye is behind the attack. According to him, they “didn’t even get the chance to pull out their guns.” Then, Captain America arrives and tells Black Widow to see the bright side of things. The movie then shows a rat accidentally pressing a button in Ant-Man’s van, releasing Ant-Man from the quantum realm. He comes into the real world and is very confused at first when he sees all of the missing posters. After that, he sees his name on the list of people that vanished and goes back to his house to find his daughter has grown up and is happy to see him again.

Ant-Man then goes to the Avengers HQ and explains to Captain America and Black Widow about how when five years passed for everyone in the real world, for him, in the quantum realm, only 5 hours passed and suggests that this can be used for time travel. He thinks that they can travel back in time to fix everything. They decide to go to Tony Stark’s house and ask him if it is possible to do this and he refuses to help. We also see Tony’s daughter, Morgan Stark (Lexi Rabe), and Tony says he doesn’t want to risk losing her. Later, Tony sees a picture of himself with Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and decides to help the Avengers. He runs some simulations and finds out how to time travel.

We then see Professor Hulk who is talking to Ant-Man and the other two Avengers about a time travel theory. Two kids run over to Hulk and ask him to take a selfie with them and then when Scott Lang asks if they want a selfie with him, they say no. Then, the Avengers go back to their HQ and attempt to time travel. Professor Hulk sets up a device and they accidentally turn Scott into a teenager, child, baby, and old man. Shortly after, Tony Stark arrives and gives Captain America his shield back. Stark also says that he figured out time travel and tells them that they messed up by sending time through Scott and not sending Scott through time.

Stark shows off a device that he created to track where a person is in time and then helps to construct a proper time machine. Meanwhile, the other Avengers are having a discussion about time travel. They list several movies about time travel, like Back to the Future, and Professor Hulk shows them that their ideas were incorrect. Black Widow then travels to Tokyo to see Hawkeye, who now seems to be very experienced in sword fight. She convinces Hawkeye that their plan will work and gets him to come along.

Meanwhile, Banner and Rocket are in New Asgard trying to convince Thor. However, they see a very drunk and fat Thor, staying inside with his roommates. One of his roommates is playing Fortnite, and Thor helps him scare a little kid off from killing said roommate in the game. Eventually, Thor comes along with them to redeem himself after his failure to kill Thanos.

It then cuts to Tony explaining how to steal the stones. The team decides to go back to the Battle of New York in 2012 to get the Time Stone from the Ancient One, the Mind Stone from Loki’s scepter, and the Space Stone/Tesseract from S.H.I.E.L.D/Hydra agents, while the others get the Power Stone from Morag, the Soul Stone from Vormir in 2014, and the Reality Stone from Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) in Asgard in 2013. With the times decided, the team suits up in quantum realm suits and taking a shrunken spaceship, step into the quantum tunnel. The team is then separated into their times with Ant-Man, Iron Man, Professor Hulk, and Captain America going to 2012, Nebula, War Machine, Black Widow, and Hawkeye going to 2014, and Rocket and Thor going to 2013.

We then cut to the scene in the first Avengers movie where all six Avengers stand in a circle ready to fight off the oncoming invasion. 2023 Ant-Man, 2023 Iron Man, 2023 Hulk, and 2023 Captain America show up in an alleyway near the invasion and send Hulk out to go find the Time Stone. They see 2012 Hulk smashing around and crushing cars and make 2023 Hulk barely hit things and unenthusiastically roar so as to blend in. Then we cut to 2013 Asgard before the invasion of the Dark Elves.

2023 Thor is with 2023 Rocket and he talks about how his mother died in battle. Thor then starts crying, and Rocket comforts him, also getting the Reality Stone. Thor decides to find his mother instead of helping Rocket, and then we see Rocket go into Jane Foster’s room to extract the stone. Then, we see Thor talking to his mother (Rene Russo) while Rocket is being chased by guards; a few moments later, Rocket enters the room and tells Thor they need to leave. Thor summons his old hammer, Mjölnir, which got broken in Thor: Ragnarok, and realizes he’s still worthy of the hammer.

Next, we see War Machine, Nebula, Hawkeye, and Black Widow flying the Guardians of the Galaxy’s old ship to 2014 Morag. War Machine and Nebula give the ship to Hawkeye and Black Widow as we start to hear the opening music to the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. We see Starlord/Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) dancing with headphones in while Redbone’s Come and Get Your Love playing in the background. We then cut to War Machine and Nebula’s point of view and learn that Quill was really dancing and humming off tune. War Machine knocks Quill out and Nebula steals his lockpick. Nebula uses her metallic arm to reach into the force field and grab the Orb (that holds the Power Stone). She hands it to War Machine, who activates his quantum suit and goes back to 2023. Nebula gets left behind and we see her vision of 2014 Nebula with Thanos. After that, Thanos arrives in his ship while Nebula is attempting to call Hawkeye and Black Widow for help.

The movie shows Hulk back in 2012 trying to convince The Ancient One to give him the Time Stone, after she had knocked his astral form out of his physical form. Then it shows Iron Man, Captain America, and Ant-Man in Avengers Tower watching the 2012 Avengers beat 2012 Loki. They hide behind pillars while watching S.H.I.E.L.D agents (who are secretly Hydra agents) clean up the mess and take the Staff. Then, the S.H.I.E.L.D agents and the Avengers (excluding Hulk) get in a elevator where Iron Man tells Hulk he cannot fit in the elevator. Hulk complains about how many stairs there are and roars, “I hate stairs.”  We see 2023 Iron Man disguise himself as a S.H.I.E.L.D agent and follow 2012 Iron Man (who is carrying the Tesseract in a briefcase). He tells Ant-Man to go into 2012 Iron Man’s Arc Reactor and unplug a piece that will make him have a mild heart attack. 2012 Iron Man goes into cardiac arrest and the drops the briefcase while the S.H.I.E.L.D agents (who had been escorting Loki out) try to help him. 2023 Iron Man attempts to seize the briefcase but is hit to the ground when 2012 Hulk bursts out of a door screaming, “I HATE STAIRS!” 2012 Loki then sees the Tesseract that had fallen out of the briefcase and uses it to teleport himself away.

The movie turns back to 2023 Captain America as he follows the S.H.I.E.L.D/Hydra agents who had the Staff into the elevator. They seem suspicious when he asks them for the Staff, so he tells them that the secretary had told him to retrieve it. When they still don’t seem sure (knowing that they are really Hydra agents) he leans near one of them and whispers Hail Hydra into his ear. The agent hands over the Staff immediately. He walks out of the elevator but is stopped by 2012 Captain America who says over his communications that he had found Loki. 2023 Captain America starts to fight with his past self. They knock each other over and 2012 Captain America says, “I can do this all day.” 2023 Captain America retorts with, “I know, I know.” 2012 Captain America launches himself at 2023 Captain America and they start to fall off the walkway they were on. When they land, 2023 Captain America grabs Loki’s Staff and uses it to hypnotise 2012 Captain America, causing him to fall asleep. Then he looks back and says, “That is America’s ass.”

We then are shown 2023 Hulk talking to The Ancient One while she denies him the Time Stone. She talks about how taking the Time Stone will cause and alternate reality, but Hulk says that if he returns it to the time it was taken, nothing will change. They continue to argue until Hulk says that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) gave the Time Stone to Thanos willingly. The Ancient One is confused but gives the Time Stone to Hulk anyways, who returns to 2023 with it.

We cut to Thanos kidnapping 2023 Nebula and making 2014 Nebula fight her future version. The 2014 Nebula is very loyal to Thanos and decides to act like the 2023 Nebula and goes into the future to steal the stones.

We return to 2012 where Captain America and Iron Man send Ant Man back into the future and use their last time jump to go back into the 1970s. They go to a top secret military base and split up. Tony Stark goes farther into the base, and when he is in the basement, he pretends to be a scientist and puts the Tesseract/Space Stone into a briefcase. 70s Howard Stark (John Slattery), Tony’s dead father, walks into the room and starts talking to Tony. Tony tells Howard that his name is also Howard and they become friends. Howard then starts telling Tony about how he is going to have a child soon and Tony gives him some advice.

The movie cuts to Captain America who is trying to steal Pym Particles from Hank Pym in the past. Captain America calls Pym and fabricates an emergency so that he can steal the particles. Captain America sees his old flame, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), as he is leaving and watches her through the blinds. He then runs out of the office because a woman who saw him in an elevator was telling security that he looked suspicious.  Stark and Rogers meet up and go back into the future.

The Avengers all meet up back in 2023 and start to celebrate, but they notice Black Widow’s absence and ask Hawkeye where she is. Hawkeye tells them that she had sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone and that they couldn’t bring her back even with the other Stones. They hold a little funeral at a dock near Avengers HQ, where the Avengers finally accept her death. They go into a room inside Avengers HQ and attach the Stones to one of Iron Man’s gauntlets. They try to decide who should put on the gauntlet and snap their fingers to bring back the people who had died. Thor tries to volunteer, but Hulk takes the gauntlet and puts it on. The power is shown flowing through him as he snaps his fingers.

A huge burst of light is shown and Hulk is on the floor with half his body severely burned. While the others try to tend to Hulk, Ant-Man looks out the window and sees a pair of birds fluttering happily. We then see 2014 Nebula use the time machine in 2023 to bring 2014 Thanos to 2023. Thanos brings his ship and fires several missiles at the Avengers.  Ant-Man is seen being blown back after the missiles hit Avengers HQ.

The movie pans out over a ruined and ash-filled Avengers HQ, the Hulk is holding up some debris. He yells at War Machine to get Rocket out from under some debris. Just as Rhodey gets Rocket out, water starts to flood the area they are in. We see Hawkeye in a tunnel holding the gauntlet when he hears noises and shoots a flashlight arrow down a long tunnel. He sees bunches of monsters called Outriders coming towards him. He starts to run down the tunnel as they chase after him. Hawkeye turns to a dead end but shoots a grappling arrow and nearly avoids one of the Outriders.

The movie cuts to Iron Man and Captain America walking out from the rubble to Thor, who is staring at Thanos. Iron Man says they should go get him, and Thor starts to summon thunder and lightning. He shoots a huge bolt of lightning at Thanos, who seems unfazed. The heroes start walking towards him, as he stands up and says that they couldn’t accept failure. Thanos states that he realizes that there will always be those who could not move on, and decides that he will rip apart the universe. Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America all try to attack Thanos, but fail. The movie shows Thanos choking Thor and shows Mjölnir flying towards him but shoots past to Captain America.

We then see Ant-Man rushing towards Hulk and the others as he jumps to save them. Then, it shows Hawkeye handing the gauntlet to 2014 Nebula who pulls out a gun on him. Just as she is about to shoot him, 2023 Nebula and 2014 Gamora (Zoe Saldana) show up and try to talk her out of it. 2014 Nebula says that she will never escape Thanos, so 2023 Nebula shoots her in the chest.

The movie cuts back to Captain America fighting Thanos and is holding his own until Thanos slices his shield with his sword and breaks the shield in half. Thanos then knocks Captain America down and stabs him in the leg. Thanos summons his army of thousands of Outriders as Captain America stands back up. The camera pans to the side showing Captain America standing in front of the oncoming army, when a portal opens up behind him, with Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) flying out of it. He smiles as many other portals open up, showing Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Star Lord, Groot (Vin Diesel), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Drax (Dave Bautista), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), Miek, Shuri (Letitia Wright), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Pepper Potts, Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Wong (Benedict Wong), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and armies of sorcerers, Wakandans, and Asgardians.

Spider-Man swings up to Iron Man and hugs him. Just then, Ant-Man turns to Giant-Man and brings War Machine, Hulk, and Rocket out of the rubble. Nebula throws Black Panther the gauntlet as he runs around the battle until Thanos’s minions catch him and he throws it to Spider-Man. Thanos is killing warriors until Scarlet Witch shows up and says that he took everything from her. Thanos replies by stating that he has never met her and she starts using his sword to pierce his chest. Thanos orders his ships to fire and Scarlet Witch gets knocked back. Quill is flying through the air when he gets shot down and is surrounded until Gamora shows up. He tells her that he loves her and missed her, but she hits him and Nebula shows up telling her that he is the one that she loved in the future.

Then, Spider-Man gets knocked out of the air and curls up as the shots are fired until Valkyrie, Rescue/Pepper Potts, Okoye, Captain Marvel, Mantis and Shuri come and help him. Doctor Strange sees that a lake near the HQ has started flooding the battle and tries to stop the water. While Thanos’s ship gets ready to fire again, Captain Marvel shows up and flies straight through the ship, destroying it while Thanos finds and picks up the gauntlet. Captain Marvel comes down and starts beating him. He tries to headbutt her but it doesn’t faze her, so while she is prying the gauntlet off him he grabs the Power Stone and knocks her out.

He is about to snap his fingers when Iron Man flies toward him and tries to grab the gauntlet but is swatted away. Thanos snaps his fingers but realizes the Stones aren’t there; he looks at Iron Man who now has the Stones in his gauntlet. Thanos asks Iron Man who he thinks he is and Iron Man replies with, “I am Iron Man” as he snaps his fingers. Doctor Strange lets the water go and everyone looks around to see Thanos’s minions turning to dust. Thanos looks around before turning into dust too. War Machine, Spider-Man, and Rescue fly down to Iron Man, who is dying. War Machine tells him he is proud of him and Tony smiles. Spider-Man comes up to Stark and says that they won and Tony shouldn’t go. Pepper then moves in front of Tony and tells him that they will be fine without him and that he can finally rest easy. Tony’s eyes lose focus as he takes his final breath. The movie then shows all of the Avengers and Nick Fury at Iron Man’s funeral, where Pepper puts an Arc Reactor (from the first Iron Man movie that says, "Proof that Tony Stark has a heart") on his coffin as they push it into the lake. At the end of the credits, a metallic clanking noise reminiscent of Iron Man making his first suit can be heard.

Avengers: Endgame’s comedy is hilarious for fans of the MCU since most of it is call-backs to other moments. There are a few jokes that a new fan might get or are just funny because of their surrealism, like Korg and Miek playing Fortnite. It is pretty balanced with its drama, which made many people in my theater cry. The drama in Endgame is perfect for those who have known these characters for over 11 years. It is very sad to see Iron Man die and Black Widow sacrifice herself.

The music is nothing new, as it is mainly other pieces from other Marvel movies, although the music still gets me nostalgic everytime I hear it. It works especially well before a battle and in the dramatic moments.

The visuals in Endgame were amazing, like seeing Ant-Man shrink and Mark Ruffalo’s face on the Hulk; however. the Outriders didn’t seem as real as they did in Infinity War. The CGI is a bit shaky, but the action made it hard to notice.

Endgame is, in my opinion, the best Marvel movie yet and is one of the best movies I’ve seen. It is a blast all the way through and really is a great end to a 11 year saga. It is definitely worth the watch and the rewatch.
