On Wednesday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi asked Donald Trump to postpone the State Of The Union, an annual speech to congress. Pelosi says that the State Of The Union will have security concerns because of the Government Shutdown. Many federal workers who work on security have been furloughed because of the shutdown. The State Of The Union is currently scheduled for January 29th, but it could change if Trump will to listen to Pelosi’s advice.
"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th," Pelosi said in a letter to Trump.
Neither the White House nor Trump have publicly responded to these suggestions. Many Republicans have criticized Pelosi’s letter. Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana says “Ironically, it seems like she's only concerned about security when it's a state of the Union that will expose what this fights all about. But she's not concerned about securing the border of our country.”
