Sri Lankan Government Blocks Access to Social Media Sites After Deadly Bombings

On Sunday, the Sri Lankan government stated that they have temporarily blocked access to several social media sites in the country. The block comes after over 200 people were tragically killed in several bombings around the country on Easter. The government temporarily blocked social media sites in order to contain the spread of false information. One major downside with the block is that it will make it harder for loved ones to communicate with each other. “I strongly condemn the cowardly attacks on our people today. I call upon all Sri Lankans during this tragic time to remain united and strong” stated the president of Sri Lanka. “Please avoid propagating unverified reports and speculation. The government is taking immediate steps to contain this situation.”

The eight bombings that took place on Easter reportedly occurred at Roman Catholic churches and high-end hotels. The bombings have been described as terrorist attacks by the prime minister of Sri Lanka.
